Dental overbite: Occurs where there is a misalignment of your teeth

Skeletal overbite: Normally happens where your jaw is the reason as to why you have an overbite as opposed to your teeth.

Reasons for having an overbite

Overbite normally occurs as a result of varying causes. These causes are not limited to the following.

  1. Loss of or lack of rear teeth (Molars teeth especially) in the lower jaw: This often enables the other teeth (remaining teeth) to just move back via lack of proper support
  2. Thumb sucking: It can contribute the narrowing of the arch of your mouth that consequently forces your upper teeth to the forward because they lack other places to go.
  3. Overuse of the pacifier
  4. Continual and frequent pushing of your tongue against your upper teeth

Note that, overbite is a condition that is normally seen in young growing children, and most overbite correction is always done on young children who are aged between 10 to 12 years old. A fitting appliance is always placed on their jaws to steer up the development of their teeth in the proper direction.

Correction can also be performed to adults by professional orthodontists. After examination by a doctor, a fitting brace is often placed on their jaws to assist in straightening their teeth. It often takes place in an extended period of time.

Problems that are caused by the overbite

Normally, a mild overbite is a major concern, but it should be known that this condition needs treatment from a specialist and experienced orthodontist. When this condition is left untreated, it can lead to challenges with breathing difficulties, tooth decay, speech and eating problems.

If you have issues on overbite, it’s advisable to consult a qualified doctor (orthodontist) so that he/she can provide a plan for your treatment.
