Equipment optometrists use
Many types of equipment are being used in an optometry practice. Here is a list of the equipment that is most commonly used by eye doctors during eye exams and treatment.
Tonometer. This machine is used to determine the amount of pressure in the fluids of the eyeball. The machine measures the pressure by very gently touching the cornea of the patient’s eye, numbing eye drops are first put into the eye to prevent discomfort or pain. Eye doctors watch out for a certain amount of pressure, that when reached, can cause damage to the optic nerve. The eye disease that this machine is trying to detect is glaucoma.
Phoropter. Before a patient can be prescribed eyeglasses, this machine will first measure the refractive error of the patient’s eyes, so that an accurate grade for the lenses of the glasses can be given to the patient.
Retinoscope. A retinoscope is used for patients who are unable to respond to the eye doctor because of mental or physical disability but would need an eye exam to get glasses. The eyes of patients are examined with the use of a mirror and a light that is shone into the eyes of the patient.
Autorefractor. This is another machine that measures the eye refraction for a patient who needs to be prescribed glasses.
Snellen test chart. This chart is one of the most common tools that an optometrist uses to diagnose if a patient needs glasses. The chart consists of letters that get smaller and smaller as they go down, if the patient is unable to read the smaller letters, the eye doctor will be able to tell how badly the patient needs glasses.
Ophthalmoscope. This machine is used to find anomalies in the interior of the eye. The patient’s eye is diagnosed using dilating eye drops for the eye doctor to get an optimal view of the eye, to get the best view of the interior of the eye. By checking the inner part of the eye, the optometrist will be able to make an accurate diagnosis of any eye diseases that may be developing.
